Kings Beach Gateway Monument Sign
Kings Beach, California
Since April of 2006, Pastore•Ryan has been working on the KingsBeach Gateway Monument Sign with the Placer CountyRedevelopment Agency and North Tahoe BusinessAssociation (NTBA) to design a recognizable gateway into KingsBeach and California. The Kings Beach Gateway Monument Sign project is part of the community development of Kings Beach as the area begins to transform into an eclectic beach community. This gateway is only the start of the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project (KBCCIP) plan to revitalize our community and will be located at the corner of SR 28 and Beaver Street. The Design Process

Preliminary concept sketches were developed first for the look and feel of the sign emphasizing a variety of forms, mass and materials in the Schematic Design phase. The design intent expressed consistent design themes of the Lake Tahoe area, capturing the movement of water and the outline of Lake Tahoe. A Washoe basket pattern was also integrated into the design to recognize this tribe as part of the Tahoe community. Material such as reclaimed steel, concrete with a mix of fly ash and granite were studied for low maintenance and highly durable, recycled or reclaimed products, and local resources of the Sierra. Three different sign concepts were developed for the Redevelopment Agency and a final schematic design was chosen for the site.
The sign chosen for the project was then furthered developed during the next phase of design, Design Development. First, Pastore•Ryan assessed the placement of the sign with relation to the prevailing winds, sun exposure and existing site utilities and looked at the viewing approach from passing cars and pedestrians. The sign began to take form as the hand sketch concept transformed into AutoCAD construction documents and details.

This process lead to the final stage of design, Construction Document, as structural, electrical and foundation details were engineered. The final material and specifications were selected to complete the design with granite for the mass of the sign, concrete as the planter and bench, a flexible solar panel to light the sign and LED lighting.
Pastore•Ryan is close to the end of the construction document phase and will be pursuing additional design review meeting with Placer County and NTBA to complete the design.
